Description: | A portrait of the East Indiaman ?Providence', shown in full sail broadside-on. The white cliffs of the English coast are visible in the distance and she is accompanied by other vessels.
The ?Providence? was constructed in 1807 but did not enter the service of the East India Company until March 1816. The vessel undertook a single voyage to St Helena and China, under the command of Captain Andrew Timbrell Mason, returning to England in August 1817.
The National Maritime Museum holds a logbook of James Drew midshipman onboard the vessel during the voyage to the East Indies and China, see LOG/C/69.
Although the painting has been signed by the artist the signature is now indistinguishable. | Publisher: | "http://collections.rmg.co.uk/" | Subjects: | Thomas Whitcombe paintings Providence | Source: | Royal Museums Greenwich | Identifier: | http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections... | Go to resource |
