Description: | Johann Martin in Augspurg 48
Augsburg dial for latitudes 10-90 North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The dial-plate is gilt-brass with a silvered compass. An engraved arrow in the compass indicates the magnetic variation at 10 West of North. Engraved around the compass on the plate are the signature and three towns with their latitudes: 'Wien [Vienna] 48', 'Londen 52' and 'Augspurg 48.' The silver latitude arc is divided [10]-90 and the silver hour-circle segment is numbered 3-12, 1-9. The outer rim is engraved with a pointing hand to mark the latitude on the latitude arc. The gnomon support and gnomon are made of gilt-brass and the dial-plate is supported by three silver legs. On the base of the compass, a table of latitudes lists towns and cities in Europe.
Unusually for Martin, the hour ring on this dial simply consists of a thick band of silver without the surrounding brass ring. Otherwise it is typical of his style of working. On the obverse side of the dial-plate, it is signed 'Johann Martin in Augspurg 48'.
