Description: | AOS fecit Anno 1682 Sub - Lat 52 degrees 40
Surveying quadrant .
This is a horary quadrant marked with Gunter scales and has a shadow square for surveying marked out in the top third of the instrument. It is signed 'A.O.S. fecit 1682' but the maker is unknown. Both sights on the right-hand side are intact but the plumb line and bob are missing. On the reverse is a spiral logarithmic scale for mathematical functions. The hole in the centre of the instrument indicates that there was once a rule or dial that moved over this scale. The quality of engraving suggests that this was made by an amateur. The instrument is made for the latitude of 52 degrees - 40' N which suggests it might have been made in Norwich, which lies close to this latitude. Both back and front are decorated with flower motifs.
Fitted qith sights.
Face marked qith 5 stars.
