Auxiliary Omnibus Companies' Association medallion owned by L.G.O.C. busman Walter John Cornell
1910s
Greater London
During the First World War, many London General Omnibus Company (L.G.O.C.) bus drivers volunteered to carry out war duties. This medal was issued by the Auxiliary Omnibus Companies' Association (A.O.C.A.). It shows a silhouette of a B-type bus surrounded by 'Antwerp, Ypres, Loos, Somme and Amiens', the names of the battles fought during 1914. Founded in 1919, the A.O.C.A. was an old comrades' association for busmen who had served at the Front during the First World War.
The medal was awarded to Mr Walter John Cornell, an L.G.O.C. bus driver who drove his B-type bus to France to transport troops the Front. As well as this medal, he was awarded the 1914 'Mons' Star, the 1914-20 British War Medal and the Allied Victory Medal.
