Description: | A half-groat of Henry VII (1485-1509), facing bust issue, probably struck at the episcopal mint in York for the benefit of Archbishop Savage (1501-1507). At some point it has been gilded on both faces; most of the gilt remains, and when found it was folded in half and contained a short length (20mm) of brown textile cord, made up of eight fine, intertwined strands. There is a chip out of the flan at 10 o'clock on the obverse. It is 21.1mm in diameter and 0.8mm thick. It weighs 1.58gm. See North, Vol. 2, No. 1715 and Spink (2003) No. 2214.British Museum Report on 2009 T332: "I have examined a coin recovered from 'York Area', Yorkshire. It is a silver half-groat (two-pence) of King Henry VII, with the initial mark martlet, struck at the York episcopal mint probably under Archbishop John Savage (1501-7). As an official silver coin of the English kings it would have been made to the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. It's weight is 1.58g, although there is a fragment missing from the coin.Single coins are not normally eligible for consideration as Treasure, but it is a well-established principle that coins converted into jewellery are indeed considered as jewellery. This coin was discovered with a range of alterations that strongly suggest it had been converted into a piece of jewellery. It has been gilded all over and, when recovered it was folded over around a short length of textile cord. In its current state, the coin has been unfolded and straightened, during which operation it is reported that a fragment broke away from the coin. However, the textile has been preserved. It seems clear, therefore, that it had been converted into a piece of jewellery with a decorative or commemorative function. It is my opinion, therefore, that under these criteria this find constitutes Treasure under the terms of the Act.Dr Barrie J. Cook Curator of Medieval and Early Modern Coinage Department of Coins and Medals British Museum 3 November 2009"
