Description: | TREASURE CASE 2009 T494: Medieval cast silver mount with traces of gilding. With a cast design of a central cross, with arms extending into each of the four corners. The surrounding area is filled with foliate designs. The reverse is recessed, with two incomplete projections. It is 22.92mm long, 23.74mm wide, 8.42m thick and weighs 13.29 grams.British Museum Report for HM Coroner Date: Late 14th-15th century Circumstances of discovery: While searching with a metal-detector. Description: A medieval silver-gilt mount, probably originally attached to either a strap or belt, or possibly a casket or book-cover. Square, engraved with a foliate design which springs from a central cross, and with smaller fleur-de-lys within the spaces in the centre of each side. The gilding is now worn. Traces of inlay survive, probably niello. The reverse is hollow, with traces of two attaching mounts or lugs. Dimensions: Width: 24mm x 23mm. Ht: 8mm. The find therefore qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
