Description: | A copper alloy pilgrim badge dating from the late Medieval period. Geoff Egan comments that this seems to be part of a group of badges "which all have a basic tripartite outline, arguably like a W or an inverted letter M. Others show the Crucifixion, St Barbara, St Christopher, St Edmund, etc" This example shows a man, angel or archangel with wings. Tendrils of a vine or serpent seem to entwine round the man who has long hair. They may stem from a pillar or other unidentified object to the left of him on which his right hand rests. Geoff Egan suggests that this may be a lily pot and that the person depicted in Gabriel. He thinks the whole scene could have been The Annunciation, with Mary on the left missing. The back of the badge has the remains of an attachment spike which is integral. It has a length of 25.07mm, width 12.09mm, thickness 17.89mm, weight 1.94g. The badge probably dates from the late medieval period. This badge is one half of a larger badge depicting the annunciation. The other part of the badge has also been found and is database number SWYOR-777328. The other part of the badge depicts Mary. An identical badge is WILT-5366C8 which has been identified by Nick Griffiths as a souvenir from a continental Roman Catholic shrine, probably c.17th-19th century in date. A slightly longer date range has been suggested for this example because of the other finds in the same area which suggest a late medieval date is possible.
