Description: | Circumstances of discoveryFour Iron Age gold coins were found by metal-detector users in Wiltshire. One coin was discovered in 2005 and recorded with the PAS (database number WILT-643B17). The remaining three were found in January and February 2010. DescriptionAll four coins are Iron Age gold staters. Three are of a type known as British MA or "Wonersh" staters; the other is a British QB stater. British MA and QB staters were produced in about 50-20 BC. The coins can be summarised as follows: British MA "Wonersh" stater, VA 1522. This coin was reported to PAS in 2005 and is recorded on the PAS database as WILT-643B17. Weight 5.20g; diameter 17mm. Now registered as CCI 10.1162 British MA "Wonersh" stater, VA1522. Weight 5.09g; diameter 19mm. Now registered as CCI 10.1163 British MA "Wonersh" stater, VA 1522. Weight 5.12g; diameter 18mm. Now registered as CCI 10.1164 British QB stater, VA 216. Weight 5.75g; diameter 17mm. Now registered as CCI 10.1165 VA = Van Arsdell, Celtic Coinage of Britain, London (1989)CCI = Celtic Coin Index, London and Oxford RecommendationThe above coins are all clearly more than 300 years old and are struck from a gold alloy that comprises well over 10% precious metal. Given the reported circumstances of discovery and the fact that they are of the same date and type, it is likely that all four represented a single hoard at the point of their deposition. As coin no. 1 was a single find at the time of its discovery in 2005 (when it was reported to the PAS), it cannot be considered as Treasure. Coins 2-4 should be considered as Treasure. ConclusionI would conclude that coins 2-4 listed above should be regarded as a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).
