Description: | TREASURE CASE 2010 T254 Early Medieval coin hoardThe two coins were found c. 25 feet apart. Both coins are of the 'mint and moneyer' type. One was issued at the mint of Coutances, and has the moneyer's name PIONTVS, with a curved T, possibly a blundered version of DIONYSVS. Both the mint and moneyer on the other coin are uncertain, as the inscriptions are blundered, but it may be derived from a coin of Combelenus of Cahors.1. Merovingian gold tremissis, mint Coutances, moneyer 'Piontus'. Obv. Diademed bust, r. CVSTANCIA Rev. Cross on globe, above curved X, pellets in angle of cross. PIONTVS Weight: 1.25 Die axis 02. Merovingian gold tremissis, uncertain mint and moneyer Obv. Lopsided star, pellet in centre (distorted bust?) COMO?EHO Rev. Small cross pommée, in circle of pellets +C.NRODH_ (order uncertain) Weight: 1.36g Die axis -Since two or more associated coins are required to constitute Treasure, under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996), the status of these two coins depends on whether they are directly associated. Coins of this period are increasingly common as finds in the UK, in hoards, as single finds, and from 'productive sites' with multiple finds from the same cultural horizon which are not directly associated. However, I am not aware of any other finds from the same area that suggests that this is a productive site. Given that, together with the proximity of the two coins, it seems more likely than not that they were deposited together, and that they therefore constitute a hoard. The gold content of the two coins has not been measured, but comparison with other gold coins of the period suggests a precious metal content of 90% or more is likely, and there is certainly no doubt at all that they would exceed the threshold of 10% defined by the Act. They thus meet all of the key criteria of Treasure, and it is therefore my opinion that these two coins should be considered as Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).Gareth Williams Curator of Early Medieval Coinage The British Museum June 10th 2010
