Description: | An incomplete cast copper-alloy circular Medieval seal matrix. (1250-1400).The tapering handle is hexagonal in cross-section and has a sub-circular suspension loop with a circular perforation. The die device is the side view of a ship (cog) with a single mast and a cross at the top. Two pairs of ropes, from the top of the mast link it to the bow and stern. Three elements projecting from the hull may represent oars. The legend:[ship's mast] * PRIVE SV. [probably filler stroke].The S is damaged is probably lying on its side.PRIVE SU = I am private.This seal matrix has a dark green shiny patina. The edges of the die are incomplete due to breaks or corrosion.Length: 18.7; diameter: 15.8mm. Weight: 3.91g.Designs of ships are relatively uncommon on personal matrices, but known. Legends vary; some are known with personal legends, others impersonal.A circular seal matrix depicting a similar ship has been recorded from Stratton Audley, Oxfordshire.
