Description: | [2008T57] Grave Fill 2201, Skeleton 2202, Grave Cut 2203The following objects were recovered during controlled archaeological excavation of an Anglo Saxon cemetery. Grave 2203 contained the remains of a single individual buried in a supine position. The left hand rested on the left hip. The grave was aligned north-northwest to south-southeast (head). Objects largely made of silver (Finds 100 and 104) were grouped in a discrete cluster at the right of the jaw and are interpreted as necklace pendants and fittings, which were probably threaded or suspended on a decayed organic thong. A small knife (Find 101) was found at the left hip, chain links and other objects (Finds 102 and 103) lay on the lateral side of the proximal end of the left femur and are interpreted as components of a chatelaine. The finds suggest that the date of interment was during the second half of the 7th or early part of the 8th century. The wire is spirally wound to form two separate cones subsequently joined, probably with solder. A small gap is evident between the final wind of wire of each cone at the join. The bead was probably made in at least two parts subsequently soldered together, examination at low magnification has not revealed any obvious joints.Bead L: 10mm; Max W: 5mm. Dia Perf: 2mm.Find 104cBiconical metal bead formed from spirally wound, 0.4mm diameter, drawn silver wire. The bead was made in two asymmetric halves, 5mm and 8mm long respectively, which were subsequently joined, probably with solder. The bead has an asymmetric cross section and an eccentric perforation; the perforated sides lie in different planes, one is flat and the other slightly concave but very irregular due to the presence of large gas bubbles.Bead L: 7mm-3mm; Max Dia: 15mm. Dia Perf: 4.5mm.Find 104hMonochrome blue glass bead, the glass is translucent and slightly vesicular. The bead has a vertical structure having been formed by winding a piece of glass around a rod; evident on its surface are striations perpendicular to the axis of the perforation. The perforated sides have been marvered flat.Bead L: 4mm; Max Dia: 9mm. Dia Perf: 4.8mmFind 104iMonochrome blue glass doughnut shaped bead. The glass is translucent, slightly vesicular and a lighter hue than beads 104g and 104h. The bead has an asymmetric cross section; one of the perforated sides is flat the other is concave; it was made by piercing a glass melt droplet from the concave side with a rod. The perforation is slightly eccentric.Bead L: 3mm; Max Dia: 9mm. Dia Perf: 1.4mmFind 104jDistorted sub-circular slip knot ring made of drawn silver wire. A fragment of a monochrome blue translucent glass circular bead remains suspended on the loop. The wire thins toward its ends, it is undecorated and flattened perpendicular to the diameter of the ring. One complete slip knot is present, it is wound twice around the opposing end. The bead has one concave side and may have been made by piercing a glass melt, it is too damaged to be certain.Dia Slip Knot: c.20mm. Dia Wire: 1mm - 0.6mm. Bead L: 2.8mm. Dia Bead: 8mm. Dia Bead Perf: 2mm.Find 104kSub-circular slip knot ring made of drawn silver wire, in three fragments when recovered but refitted during conservation. The wire is undecorated and thins toward its ends. The slip knots are formed by crossing the wire then winding once around the ring. A circular monochrome yellow translucent glass bead is suspended on the ring. The bead has a short barrel shaped cross section; one of the perforated sides is concave the other is flat, which suggests that it was formed by piercing a droplet of glass melt.Dia Slip Knot: 10mm. Dia Wire: 1mm - 0.7mm. Bead L: 3mm. Dia Bead: 9mm. Dia Dead Perf: 1.8mm.Find 104lFragment of undecorated drawn silver wire with another piece of piece of undecorated drawn silver wire attached to it with a slip knot. A monochrome blue/green translucent glass doughnut bead is suspended on the wire. The bead has a short asymmetric cross section; one perforated side is concave the other is flat. The bead was made by perforating a glass melt from the concave side.Dia Wire: 0.5mm. Bead L: 2.2mm. Dia Bead: 8.5mm. Dia Bead Perf: 1mm.Find 104mSlightly distorted sub-circular slip knot ring made of drawn silver wire. The wire thins slightly toward its ends. The ring is decorated with a 17mm wide zone of incised parallel lines, which run around the wire in a band located roughly opposite the slip knots. The slip knots were formed by crossing the ends of the wire then winding each end tightly four times around the ring.Dia Ring: 24mm - 25mm. Dia Wire: 0.8mm - 1.1mm.Find 104nSlightly distorted sub-circular slip knot ring made of undecorated drawn silver wire. The ends of the wire have been beaten almost flat and are crossed then tightly wound around the ring twice to form two slip knots.Dia Ring: 22mm - 23mm. Dia Wire: 0.9mm.Find 104oIncomplete sub-circular ring made from undecorated drawn silver wire, refitted form two pieces during conservation. The ring is decorated with 3mm, 4mm, 7mm, 4mm and 3mm wide roughly equidistant bands of incised parallel lines, which encircle the wire; the widest band lies opposite the slip knots. Two slip knots are formed by crossing then tightly winding the ends around the ring once and one and a half times respectively.Dia Ring: 20mm - 23mm. Dia Wire: 0.6mm - 1mm.Find 104sNear complete circular slip knot ring made of undecorated drawn silver wire. The sides of the wire perpendicular to the circumference have been slightly flattened and the ends of the wire are slightly thinned. The slip knots have been formed by crossing the ends then tightly winding them twice around the ring.Dia Ring: 19mm. Dia Wire: 0.8mm - 1mm.Find 104tIncomplete and slightly distorted sub-circular ring made from drawn silver wire. An 8mm wide decorative zone of incised parallel lines is present. The broken ends are tarnished suggesting that the damage is not recent; one of the broken ends exhibits a stepped fracture combined with a longitudinal crack. Probably part of a slip knot ring.Dia Ring: 20mm. Dia Wire: 0.8mm - 1mm.Find 104uIncomplete sub-circular ring made from drawn silver wire. The wire is ovate; the sides perpendicular to the circumference have been slightly flattened. The ends of the wire are slightly thinned. The ring is decorated with three 5mm wide decorative zones of incised parallel lines, which encircle the wire. The lines on he flattened part of the ring are heavily worn or were not as deeply incised. The broken ends are tarnished suggesting that the damage is not recent. Probably part of a slip knot ring.Dia Ring: 20mm. Dia Wire: 0.7mm - 1mm.Find 104vIncomplete and distorted sub-circular ring made from drawn silver wire. Recovered in three pieces and refitted during conservation. The wire is ovate; the sides perpendicular to the circumference have been slightly flattened and the ends of the wire are slightly thinned. If the pieces are refitted correctly the ring was decorated with three, 5mm, 8mm and 6mm wide decorative zones of incised parallel lines, which encircle the wire. The lines on the flattened part of the ring are heavily worn or were not as deeply incised. The broken ends are tarnished suggesting that the damage is not recent. Probably part of a slip knot ring.Dia Ring: c.24mm. Dia Wire: 0.4mm - 0.8mm.Find 104wFragment of sub-circular slip knot ring made of undecorated drawn silver wire. The wire is ovate; the sides perpendicular to the circumference have been slightly flattened. The ends of the wire are slightly thinned. Two slip knots have been formed by crossing then tightly winding the ends of the wire twice around the ring. The two largest fragments are completely decorated with incised transverse lines and may be part of one very delicate ring with a diameter of no more than 9mm.KnifeIron knife (SF 101). Top set rectangular section tang (L: 23mm), which splays sharply into blade. Blade back exhibits a slight curvature which appears to slope more steeply near the missing tip. The cutting edge was damaged when recovered, it is unclear whether this was due to pronounced wear or is a consequence of corrosion (Evison Type 4?; Seventh century). Overlay the anterior left ilium, the left hand may have clasped or rested upon the hilt. The missing tip pointed away from body and was raised slightly towards the head.Blade L: 60mm; W: 9mm; Th: 2mm. Weight 7g.Chatelaine(Finds 102a-i and 103a-o)Find 102aAntler ring found at the lateral side, proximal end of the left femur, recovered in five parts and refitted during conservation. The remnant of an iron rivet is presentThe surfaces of the ring are heavily pitted and in very poor condition. One side of the ring may have been undecorated. However, the other side (shown above) has faint traces of decorative carving. Tentatively identified decorative motifs comprise a concentric line incisedc.2mm from the outer edge of the ring. The rivet was proximally orientated in the grave and may have secured a suspension plate and loop. Small, c.1mm wide and c.2mm deep notches are incised into the outer edge of the ring on either side of the rivet. A larger c.3mm wide notch is also present at the outer edge, c.35mm from the rivet. The partial remnant of a drilled hole of c.4mm diameter is tentatively identified in an area of edge damage located opposite the larger notch. c.2mm from the central perforation and a subsequent concentric band of rings and dots. A 4mm wide band of loosely interwoven two strand plait is definitely present at part of the outer edge of the ring. The ring may have been painted; small areas of thick reddish possible pigment are present on both sides in the vicinity of the rivet.Dia Ring: 51mm-58 mm. Dia Perf: 24mm. Th: 2mm at outer edge, 4mm at inner edge. Weight 8g.Finds 102b - iFinds 102bOne s-shaped ferrous chain link, very corroded and in two fragments; made from a circular sectioned iron rod. Small segments of other ferrous chain links or suspension loops are present within the corrosion at either end of the link.L: 26m. W of Loop: 10mm. Dia Rod: 3mm.Find 102cFragment of ferrous rod with a rounded section. A bulbous concretion is present at one end, but the rod is severely corroded and x-radiography did not reveal whether it is the remnant of a terminal loop.L: 21mm. Dia Rod: 3mm.Find 102dFragment of ferrous rod, very corroded and cross section uncertain. Part of a terminal loop is present at one end of the rod; it surrounds a small segment of another ferrous terminal or suspension loop. X radiography revealed no further detail.L: 18mm. Dia Rod: 2mm.Find 102eFragment of ferrous rod with square or rounded section. X-radiography shows remnants of three perpendicular winds of rod within the thickest section of corrosion. A remnant of another textile cordis wrapped three times perpendicularly around the loop on the external side of the ring, probably to tighten and bind it. The cords are made of about twenty z-spun linen threads.Dia: 23mm. Th: 4mm.Find 103bAntler ring found at the lateral side, proximal end of the left femur; recovered in three parts and refitted during conservation. Ac.9mm long and c.3mm wide notch is carved into the ring from the external edge; remnants of a ferrous fitting, possibly part of a suspension loop, remain concreted to the notch adjacent to the outer edge of the ring. Similar carved decorative motifs are present on each side of the ring; two concentric rows of carved ring and dot. Running around the external edge are two incised parallel lines.Dia Ring: 32mm. Dia Perf: 9mm. Th: 3mm.Find 103cCircular, monochrome greenish-blue translucent glass bead, which exhibits a short globular, slightly biconical section when viewed from the side. It has a vertical structure having been formed by winding glass around a rod; a relatively crisp angle is evident were the sides meet the perforation.Bead L: 6mm. Max Dia: 9mm. Each rod appears to have been bent into a loose loop and the return of the loop twisted around the shaft two or three times. Dia Rod: c.1mm.Find 103hFerrous rod exhibiting a square or rounded cross section, very corroded. Three winds of rod encompass the shaft at one end; it is unclear from visual examination and x-radiography whether they identify part of a terminal loop or the attachment method of another object. Curved fragments of one or two other loops or chain links are also present at the end of the rod showing evidence of a terminal loop or method of attachment.L: 56mm. Max W: 4mm.
