Description: | Roman coin hoard. Details of the Treasure report by Eleanor Ghey are below:A hoard of 205 copper alloy coins and three denarii were found in February to March 2008. The find was reported to the Finds Liaison Officer, Danielle Wootton. A further 26 copper alloy coins (one of which was found to be modern) were found at a later date and brought to the BritishMuseum in December, where the hoard was cleaned to allow identification. A further addenda of 79 coins (including one denarius and two nummi) and some possibly associated artefacts were brought to the museum in March 2009, and an additional radiate from the site was recorded by PAS Finds Adviser Sam Moorhead in Devon. The coinsApart from the four silver denarii, the coins consist of a mixture of copper alloy denominations known as dupondii, asses and sestertii and are mostly worn in appearance. The latest identifiable coin of the hoard is a sestertius of Septimius Severus (AD 193-211). Two radiates, of Tetricus II (AD 272-4) and Allectus (AD 293-296), were also included in the group but are likely to have been a stray find and not part of a hoard, being of much later date. This is also the likely explanation for the presence of two fourth century nummi in the second addenda. The group of coins can be summarised as follows:denarii: hoard 1st addenda 2nd addenda totalVespasian (AD 69-79) 1 - - 1Joint reign of Septimius Severus and Caracalla(AD 198-209)Julia Domna 1 - 1 2Geta (as Caesar) 1 - - 1Sub-total 3 - 1 4sestertii and lower denominations:Domitian (AD 81-96) 4 - 1 5Nerva (AD 96-98) 2 - 2 4Trajan (AD 98-117) 17 2 3 22Hadrian (AD 117-138) 19 1 6 26Sabina 1 - 1 2Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161) 15 1 9 25Faustina I 8 1 - 9Marcus Aurelius as Caesar 5 1 - 6Hadrian or Antoninus Pius 1 2 1 4Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180) 4 2 2 8Divus Antoninus 1 - - 1Faustina II 3 - - 3Lucilla 1 - - 1Commodus (AD 180-192) 1 - 1 2Uncertain Antonine Emperor 1 5 - 6Unc. The other objects were examined by Richard Hobbs, who was of the opinion that they were undiagnostic in date and unlikely to have been associated with the hoard.Metal Content and AgeThe coins satisfy the terms of the Treasure Act with regard to age and quantity, being base metal coins over than 300 years old in a quantity over ten and four silver coins.Of the same find? This pattern fits well with that which might be expected for a hoard of Roman coins of mixed denomination deposited late in the second century AD. The five later coins (two radiates and two nummi and a modern coin) do not fit into the pattern of the hoard and can be considered as stray finds from the same site.RecommendationI conclude that the coins above (with the exception of the five later coins) constitute a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).Dr. Eleanor GheyCurator of Iron Age and Roman coinsThe Department of Coins and MedalsThe BritishMuseum1 June 2009
