Description: | 45 silver coins, addenda to a hoard discovered near Dereham, Norfolk(2008 T640)Circumstances of discovery: Found by Mr Pat and Mrs Sally Buckley whilst searching with metal detectors on arable land between November 2008 and January 2009.Description: 44 silver denarii and 1 silver radiate ranging in date from Vespasian (69-79) to Gordian III (238-44). These were found in the same limited area as the large hoard of over 1,000 coins discovered by the same finders from 2004. This ended in c240, and these coins are perfectly typical of the contents of that hoard. Likewise, they share the same features of patination and there is no doubt they represent further remains of this dispersed hoard.Catalogue:1) Vespasian, 72-3, RIC 422) Vespasian, 79, RIC 1133) Trajan, 114-7, RIC 3374) Hadrian, 134-8, RIC 299a5) Diva Faustina I, 141, RIC 3626) Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, 148-9, RIC 4447) Faustina II, 145-61, RIC 502a8) Commodus, 190, RIC 2089) Didius Julianus, 193, RIC 110) Clodius Albinus, 195-7, RIC 36b11) Septimius Severus, 195, RIC 6112) Septimius Severus, 195-6, RIC 6813) Septimius Severus, 196-7, RIC 96a14) Septimius Severus, 197, RIC 10415) Septimius Severus, 197, RIC 10616) Septimius Severus, 198-200, RIC 514 (Laodicea)17) Septimius Severus, 205, RIC 19718) Julia Domna, 196-211, RIC 55119) Julia Domna, 196-211, RIC 56020) Julia Domna, 196-211, RIC 57221) Julia Domna, 196-211, RIC 57622) Plautilla, 202-5, RIC 36723) Caracalla, 196-8, RIC 11a24) Caracalla, 203, RIC 6925) Caracalla, 205, RIC 8226) Geta, 203-8, RIC 38b27) Caracalla, 214, RIC 238A28) Macrinus, 217-8, RIC 80a29) Elagabalus, 218-22, RIC 73b30) Elagabalus, 218-22, RIC 7831) Elagabalus, 218-22, RIC 95b32) Elagabalus, 218-22, RIC 123b33) Julia Paula, 219-20, RIC 22234) Julia Paula, 219-20, RIC 22235) Julia Maesa, 218-23, RIC 27236) Julia Mamaea, 222-35, RIC 36037) Severus Alexander, 222, RIC 5c38) Severus Alexander, 230, RIC 10239) Severus Alexander, 222-8, RIC 127c40) Severus Alexander, 222-8, RIC 127c41) Severus Alexander, 222-8, RIC 13342) Severus Alexander, 222-8, RIC 13343) Severus Alexander, 222-8, RIC 16844) Gordian III, 238-9, RIC 4 (radiate)45) Gordian III, 241, RIC 129Date: The initial part of the hoard was deposited c240; these coins are also of the first, second or early third century date and were no doubt deposited with the main group in c240.Conclusion: These coins represent addenda to the large Dereham hoard and, as silver coins of greater than 300 years antiquity and deposited together, they qualify as Treasure. | Publisher: | http://finds.org.uk | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Identifier: | http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/r... | Go to resource |
