These coins are traditionally ascribed to the Corieltavi who are known to have inhabited the Lincolnshire and Leicestershire area in the Roman period.(a) North Eastern gold stater, inscribed VEP CORFDiameter: 21.5mm; weight: 5.14gObverse description: abstract wreath patternReverse description: horse, left, inscription aroundType: ABC (Rudd) 1854 = VA (Van Arsdell) 960 = BMC (Hobbs) 3302CCI: 11.1007;(b) North Eastern gold stater, inscribed VEP CORFBroken into two pieces; Maximum diameter: 21.4mm; weight: 4.82gObverse description: abstract wreath patternReverse description: horse, left, inscription aroundType: ABC (Rudd) 1854 = VA (Van Arsdell) 960 = BMC (Hobbs) 3302CCI: 11.1008;(c) North Eastern gold stater, inscribed VEP CORFDiameter: 20.2mm; weight: 5.22gObverse description: abstract wreath patternReverse description: horse, left, inscription aroundType: ABC (Rudd) 1854 = VA (Van Arsdell) 960 = BMC (Hobbs) 3302CCI: 11.1009;(d) North Eastern gold stater, inscribed VEP CORFDiameter: 19.9mm; weight: 4.99Obverse description: abstract wreath patternReverse description: horse, left, inscription aroundType: ABC (Rudd) 1854 = VA (Van Arsdell) 960 = BMC (Hobbs) 3302CCI: 11.1010;RecommendationThe above coins are clearly more than 300 years old. All four are struck from metal alloys well above the 10% precious metal threshold stipulated by the Treasure Act (comprising gold, silver and copper). Given the reported circumstances of discovery and the type and date of the coins, there is no reason to suppose that they represent anything other than all, or part of, a small hoard.ConclusionI would conclude that the present coins should be regarded as a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).Ian LeinsCurator of Iron Age and Roman CoinsBritish Museum01/06/11ReferencesCCI = Celtic Coin Index, Oxford University and the British MuseumABC = Cottam et al, Ancient British Coinage, Aylsham 2010VA = Van Arsdell, Celtic Coinage of Britain, London 1989BMC Hobbs, British Iron Age Coinage in the British Museum, London 1996
