Description: | 39 copper alloy fragments and 1 small stone were found by Mr Alan Smith in October 2010 whilst metal detecting at Kingstons Farm, Matching Green, Essex owned by M.J and S.C. Collins. Description 1. Copper alloy ?socketed axe fragment - It contains a casting seam running along the fragment and is slightly corroded towards the back rather than the front. Max Length: 33.5mm; max width: 28.85mm Weight: 13.7g 2. Copper alloy ?socketed axe fragment - It has two visible ribs running along the length of the fragment and is slightly bent. The back is more corroded than the front with few specks of green. Max Length: 17.55mm; max width: 16.57mm Weight: 2.2g 3. Probable copper alloy socketed axe fragment - The casting seam is visible and the fragment could potentially be part of the body and collar of the axe. It is very green with clear signs of corrosion. Max length: 32.7mm; max width: 21.53mm; Weight: 5.5g 4. Copper alloy fragment - the curve of the edge backs on itself and is too smooth to be that of an axe. Max length; 34.36mm; max width: 12.94mm Weight: 12.8g Discussion The 39 copper alloy fragments cannot be easily dated, or in some cases even identified. One fragment of a socketed axe indicates a probable Late Bronze Age date (c. 1100-800 BC) whilst blade and casting waste fragments are consistent with this dating. The hoard was found c. 20 ft to the west of 2010 T468, a Late Bronze Age Ewart Park hoard (c. 1000 - 800 BC) comprising 40 copper alloy objects including a socketed axe, 13 fragments of the socketed axe heads, two sword fragments, one spearhead fragment, a tanged and lugged chisel, a lozenge pommel end, a socketed knife fragment, two blade fragments, one socketed gouge, 16 ingot fragments and two unidentified fragments. Despite comparing the object forms, breakages and patinas, no connections could be established between 2010 T468 and this hoard of 39 copper alloy fragments. Late Bronze Age hoards are well known throughout Essex (Turner 2010) and include recent discoveries as at Uttlesford District, Essex (2008 T485 see link) Conclusion The hoard fulfils the requirements for being considered Treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act (2002 Amendment).
