Description: | A silver penny of Elizabeth I (1558-1603). Obverse shows crowned bust left. Obverse legend reads E D G ROSA SINE SPINE with single pellet stops and cross crosslet initial mark (1560-1). Reverse shows royal arms on shield, no date visible above shield. Reverse legend reads CIVI/TAS/LON/DON. This is a coin of the first issue coinage, see North, J.J. 1991, Vol.II, p.133, No.1988. These coins normally end the obverse legend with 'SPINA' rather than SPINE. It should be noted that you still get spelling errors on coins of this date, often missing letters rather than the wrong letter as is the case with this coin. This coin is also unusual in terms of weight as it is slightly heavier than most which generally fall between 0.45-0.5g.The die axis is 10 o'clock, diameter 14.19mm, 0.59mm thick, weight 0.6g.
