Description: | Treasure reportAll ten coins are Iron Age gold staters, of a type known as Gallo-Belgic E. The name stems from the fact they were probably struck on the Continent, in north-western France or Gallia Belgica. They were produced in about 60-50 BC. The coins can be summarised as follows:1. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 2bWeight: 6.18g; diameter: 15mm. Registered as CCI 10.11522. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 2bWeight: 6.22g; diameter: 18mm. Registered as CCI 10.11533. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 2bWeight: 6.23g; diameter: 17mm. Registered as CCI 10.11544. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 2bWeight: 6.19g; diameter: 17.5mm. Registered as CCI 10.11555. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 2b-cWeight: 6.23g; diameter: 16.75mm. Registered as CCI 10.11566. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 2b-cWeight: 6.19g; diameter: 16mm. Registered as CCI 10.11577. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 2b-cWeight: 6.22g; diameter: 16.5mm. Registered as CCI 10.11588. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 2b-cWeight: 6.18g; diameter: 17mm. Registered as CCI 10.11599. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 2bWeight: 6.18g; diameter: 17.5mm. Registered as CCI 10.116010. Gallo-Belgic E, Sills class 1cWeight: 6.25g; diameter: 17.5mm. Registered as CCI 10.1161Sills = J. Sills, 'Identifying Gallic War staters', Chris Rudd List 83, 2-6CCI = Celtic Coin Index, London and OxfordRecommendationThe above coins are all clearly more than 300 years old and are struck from a gold alloy that comprises well over 10% precious metal. Given the reported circumstances of discovery and the fact that all ten are of the same date and type, there is no reason to suppose that they did not represent a single hoard at the point of their deposition.ConclusionI would conclude that the present coins should be regarded as a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).Wendy Scott, Finds Liaison officer for Leicester, Leicestershire and RutlandIan Leins, Curator of Iron Age and Roman Coins, The British Museum4 February 2011
