Description: | An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy pointed-oval seal matrix (1200-1300). The engraved die depicts the Madonna and child under a canopy. The child is held to the right (as viewing an impression). Below the Madonna there is another canopy under which there is a supplicant figure, possibly praying. This design is surrounded by an inscription: +MATER DEI MISERERE MEI (Mother of God have mercy on me). The initial mark is a cross potent. The rear face has a vertical median raised rib which terminates with a suspension loop at the top. There is a small break at the top of the loop. At the front the die is corroded and has no patina. The rear face is largely covered with a mid green patina. 31.3 x 20.3 x 7.9mm.Weight: 9.54g. A seal matrix with a similar design has the same inscription has been recorded from Worfield Parish, Shropshire. See, Portable Antiquities Scheme find: WMAS-84EB67.
