Description: | Richards Castle, Herefordshire (2011 T102)I have examined 3 coins reported found at Richards Castle, Herefordshire. These were found at the same findspot as a larger group of eight coins reported as Treasure Case 2010 T612 (Cook 2010). This group is an addendum (Addenda 1) to the original discovery. All are silver official coins of the English kings Edward IV and Henry VII, which will be of the traditional sterling standard, a little over 90% fine metal. The details of the coins are as follows.Edward IV, First Reign (1464-1470)9. Half Groat Type VII - IX, crown / unclear (1467-1469) London 1.36 grams (worn / clipped)North 1584Henry VII (1485-1509)10. Groat class 3c, Pansy (1490-1504) London 2.68 gramsNorth 1705c11. Half-groat Martlet (1501-1507) Episcopal Mint: York Archbishop Savage 1.52 grams (worn / clipped)North 1716DiscussionAll these coins were part of the English currency in the decades around 1500, along with gold and smaller silver denominations (pennies and the fractional coinage). This group, therefore, represents a selected part of the currency, the higher-value silver coins, roughly equivalent to modern banknotes in terms of usage and value.StatementSince these coins are all of good silver, will have circulated together and represent a selected group of material, it is my opinion that the find fulfils the criteria of Treasure, according to the terms of the Act.References:Cook B. 2010: 'Richards Castle, Herefordshire (2010 T612)' unpublished Treasure Report for HM CoronerNorth J.J. 1991: English Hammered Coinage, Volume 2 1272-1662 LondonPeter ReavillFinds Liaison Officer Herefordshire and ShropshirePortable Antiquities SchemeLudlow Museum Resource Centre6th April 2011For first part of the hoard please see: 2010 T612
