Description: | Coin Number 2Description: The find comprises two "Gallo-Belgic" Aa class 4 gold staters, one of which is slightly bent to the edge. Coins of this type were struck in the mid 2nd century BC.Coin 1 (bent): Diameter: 24.2mm; thickness: 1.3mm thick; weight: 7.28gCoin 2: Diameter: 24.5mm; thickness: 1.2mm; weight: 6.95gGallo-Belgic A staters were struck in the Somme valley area of N.W. France and are traditionally attributed to the Ambiani. Class 4 staters are relatively rare as British finds, with just three or four others securely provenanced, all from south-eastern England. The present examples are quite light (full weight specimens are around 7.6-7.7 grams) and, thus, were probably in circulation in this country for several decades before they were buried.RecommendationThe above coins are clearly more than 300 years old. Both are struck from metal alloys well above the 10% precious metal threshold stipulated by the Treasure Act. Given the reported circumstances of discovery and the type and date of the coins, there is no reason to suppose that they represent anything other than all, or part of, a small hoard or votive deposit.ConclusionWe would conclude that the present coins should be regarded as a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).Julian Watters, Finds Liaison Officer, Hertfordshire and BedfordshireJohn Sills, the Celtic Coin Index, OxfordIan Leins, Curator of Iron Age and Roman Coins, the British Museum
