Description: | Three Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) silver sceats found close together. Treasure case no. 2011 T356.Report on three Anglo-Saxon coins from Arreton, Isle of Wight 2011 T356This report concerns three Anglo-Saxon pennies (sceattas) found at Arreton, Isle of Wight, by members of the Vectis Searchers metal detecting club. Although the three coins were found by different individuals, they were all found on the same occasion in close proximity. As coins, the question of whether they constitute Treasure depends on whether they can be associated as a single find, or represent three distinct finds which are unlikely to be associated, since a single coin would not constitute Treasure. The three coins are as follows:1. Silver penny (sceatta), Series E, early to mid 8th centuryWeight: 1.9g2. Silver penny (sceatta), Series R, early to mid 8th centuryWeight: 1.07g3. Silver penny (sceatta), Series E, early to mid 8th centuryWeight: 1.00gOne of the pennies is of Series R, attributed to East Anglia, while the others represent different varieties of Series E, minted in Frisia (modern Netherlands). Both Series E and Series R fall within the Secondary phase of the early Anglo-Saxon pennies, issued c. AD 710-50. Both series have widespread distribution, and it is common within this monetary phase for coins of different origins but comparable weight and quality to circulate together. There is therefore no inherent reason to doubt that they are associated, and I have not been informed of anything in the find circumstances which would indicate that they could be stray finds from a site with wider evidence of 8th century activity. It is therefore my opinion that all three coins constitute a single hoard, and therefore constitute Treasure in that regard.Coins of this period have a moderately high silver content, far in excess of the threshold of 10% stipulated by the Treasure Act (1996). Given the age and likely metal content, and the high probability of the coins being deposited together, it is therefore my opinion that these coins represent Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).Gareth WilliamsCurator of Early Medieval CoinsThe British Museum
