Description: | Treasure case 2011 T357: Disclaimed, returned to finderDescription: Medieval brooch formed of a silver penny of William I (1066-1087), 'Bonnet' type, minted by Brihtred at Oxford, AD 1068-1070, North 842. The coin has been turned into a brooch by the addition of silver attachments to the obverse. The hinge is now missing with several holes marking the point it was attached. The catch is formed of a strip of silver sheet, riveted to the coin with a silver rivet at either end with the middle section flattened together to form a double thickness strip which is then bent over into a C shape to form the catch. The front shows evidence of gilding and one half is blackened and has slight distortions suggesting some possible fire damage. Coin: Obverse design: Robed bust facing, crowned and diademed with two fillets at each side of the headObverse legend: + [PIL]LELM[VS REX]Reverse design: Long voided cross with annulet at centre and pellet flanked by crescents a the end of each arm. Triangular piles with pellets at ends in each quarter.Reverse legend:+ [B]R[I]HTRED ON OXCIDie axis measurement: 12Dimensions: It is 19.2mm in diameter, 4.8mm thick including the loop, 0.9 excluding and weighs 1.69 grams.Discussion: This forms part of a relatively large and growing group of known coin brooches or badges from the late Anglo-Saxon and early Norman period. The brooch attachments have been placed so that when worn the gilded reverse of the coin, showing a cross, would be visible. This is typical for brooches/badges of this type. The die orientation means that if the cross is upright, the monarch's head is also upright on the obverse. Although single coins are not normally considered to qualify as Treasure, coins converted in this way have generally been treated as items of jewellery and thus provide several precedents for considering finds of this type to be Treasure. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.Laura Burnett, Somerset FLOGareth Williams, Curator of Early Medieval coins, June 2011
