Description: | A copper-alloy Roman Aucissa brooch dating to c.43-75AD. The brooch is 41.67mm high and weights 5.19g.The headplate is incomplete, having broken off before the two tabs started to curve backwards to form a cylinder that would have originally held an axis bar for the pin, also now missing, to attach to. The pin, suspended from the axis bar, would have rested within the central slit of the headplate. The slit is 1.30mm wide and has a minimum length of 4.58mm. The tabs have a width of 7.92mm and length of at least 5.08mm from the start of the slit. These tabs are 1.16mm thick. The headplate has a total minimum width of 14.70mm across the two tabs. The area of the headplate below the slit has a width of at least 12.62mm but might have originally been slightly wider as it seems that some degree of corrosion or damage has occurred to this area of the brooch. This part of the headplate is 0.93mm thick and has a length of 3.75mm between the slit and top of the bow. A shallow transverse groove of 0.49mm separates the head plate from the bow. This area is bordered by a thin line of transverse rope-twist just below the slit and just above the groove. On each side of the head-plate is a single small circular perforation of 1.42mm diameter. The perforation on the left hand side is currently set only 0.30mm from the edge of the head-plate. Only the inner half of the perforation to the right survives. It is possible that these perforations originally had a small chain attached which then attached to another decorative clothing item. The size and delicate nature of the perforation makes it less likely that the perforation could have been used as added security against the brooch being lost or the garment coming undone. The bow has a high arch, is 7.96mm wide tapering to 5.45mm where it joins the foot, 2.42mm thick and has a curved length of 53.00mm. The bow's cross-section is sub-triangular due to a flat underside and central lateral ridge on the upper surface. The central ridge is decorated by a single central line of, now unclear, design. The decoration might have originally been rope-twist. The edges of the bow have a border of rope-twist 1.10mm wide. The bow ends in a flat area of rectangular cross-section that consists of 3.04mm of the total bow length. This section of the bow has three thin transverse lines equally spaced as decoration. The foot, set at an angle greater than 90 degrees to the end of the bow, tapers to a width of 2.99mm. The foot has a length of 9.64mm and the remains of a catch-plate survive behind. The catch-plate is 0.76mm thick and extends out from the foot by 3.80mm. The catch-plate return no longer survives. Below the foot and catch-plate is a spherical knob of 5.75mm diameter and 4.41mm length. The upper half of the knob is fluted. Many Aucissa brooches can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, just a few of which are listed below: GLO-9D8D65, BH-C6FD63, WILT-70A243, NLM-8C3AE8, YORYM-922E72, SOM-9CCF63, WILT-E2AF16, WILT-6D7091.Examples can also be seen in Crummy, N. 1983, p.8-10, Fig.5, no.19, and Griffiths, D., Philpott, R. & Egan, G. 2007, p.42 & 55, pl.4, no.105 & 106.
