Description: | Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch. Only the head and the upper segment of the bow remain. The head has the incomplete remains of an integrally cast circular head loop projecting from the top and and to either side of this projecting from the reverse of the head are a pair of semi-circular attachment lugs each with a central piercing. These lugs would have carried the, now missing, axis bar for holding the pin spring in place. One of the lugs is incomplete and there are traces of ferrous corrosion in the hollow between the two lugs from the pin fitting. The front of the head of the brooch has decorative moulded design consisting of two raised semi-circular ridges at the top forming the trumpet head and below this the bow is triangular in section with a prominent central crest running down the bow to the point where it meets with another raised semi-cylindrical/sub-triangular ridge. This ridge marks a sharp change in angle of the bow of about 115 degrees. Below this ridge the bow narrows and becomes more semi-cylindrical in section. It is at this point that the brooch is broken but typically in Trumpet brooches the 'waist' section of the brooch would have had a total of 3 such raised ridges.This brooch has been dated to the earlier Roman period c.
