Description: | 2011 T502 Upper Thames hoard, London, 2nd addendumREPORT TO HM CORONERCircumstances of discoveryAn Iron Age coin was recovered by metal-detector on the Thames foreshore. The find was made on the 20th August 2011 and was delivered to the British Museum in November 2011. A previous find of 16 Iron Age coins was made in June and July 2008 by the same finder in the same location (2008 T412) and an addendum of one coin found in January 2009.The CoinsLike the previous 17 coins, this coin is also a 'Flat Linear I' potin. While the majority of Iron Age coins were produced by striking a gold, silver or bronze blank between a pair of dies, potins were instead cast in moulds and made from a lead/tin-rich bronze alloy. Although highly abstract, it is clear that their designs copied earlier types which depicted a human head and a butting bull, originally derived from the coinage of the Greek city of Massalia (Marseille, France). Flat Linear potins were produced in Kent and the south-east in the mid first century BC.This coin has been cut in half (only half remains) and is of type VA 129 (var. - bull right) (ABC 171); head right, bull right and weighs 0.95g. It does not join with any of the fragmentary potins reported previously.VA = Van Arsdell, Celtic Coinage of Britain, London, 1989ABC = Cottam et al., Ancient British Coins, Aylsham 2010Age, number, metal contentThe present find easily satisfies the terms of the Treasure Act with regard to its age, being clearly more than 300 years old. This coin can be considered as an addendum to the previous find of 17 coins, a hoard of over 10 base metal coins.Of the same find? The type and reported circumstances of discovery strongly suggest that this coin formed a single group with the previous find of 17 potins (2008 T412 and 2009 T60) at the time of their burial in antiquity.ConclusionI would conclude that the present coin should be regarded as a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).Dr. Eleanor GheyDepartment of Coins and MedalsThe British Museum5th July 2012
