Description: | DescriptionOne coin is a Western uninscribed gold quarter stater of a type produced in the Gloucestershire-Worcestershire-Oxfordshire area between about 40 and 10 BC. The other is an Eastern gold quarter stater of Cunobelin struck in about AD 10-40. Coins of the latter type were produced in Essex, and Hertfordshire, but are regularly found hoarded outside of this area. The coins can be summarised as follows:1. Quarter stater of the uninscribed Western series, 12.7mm in diameter and weighing 1.3 g. British RB type (ABC 2009 = BMC 2942-46). Registered with CCI as 11.10922. Quarter stater of Cunobelin, 10.45mm in diameter, 1.4g. Classic type (ABC 2822 = VA 2038 = BMC 1850). Registered with CCI as 11.1093VA = Van Arsdell, Celtic Coinage of Britain, London (1989)ABC = Cottam et al, Ancient British Coinage, Aylsham (2010)BMC = Hobbs, British Iron Age Coinage in the British Museum, London (1996)CCI = Celtic Coin Index, Institute of Archaeology, University of OxfordAge and metal contentBoth coins are clearly more than 300 years old and have precious metal contents well above the 10% threshold stipulated by the Treasure Act.Part of the same find?Although the coins were produced in different regions and at different dates, the fact that they were discovered on a significant Iron Age site, within ten meters of each other, suggests that they should be considered as related finds. It is possible that the two coins represent part, or all of a small coin hoard. Indeed, it is of some interest that coins of both types were present in a large hoard of Iron Age coins found at Pershore in Worcestershire in 1993. It is equally possible, however, that the two coins were deposited as part of one or more acts of votive deposition at the site. Continuous ritual deposits constitute Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act.
