Description: | A cast copper-alloy seal matrix of Medieval date. It has a flat circular die with hexagonally faceted conical terminal that tapers to a lozenge shaped suspension loop with circular aperture and moulded transverse collar that has incised double grooves. The aperture is encrusted, perhaps with the remains of an incomplete suspension loop. At the centre of the die is a stag's head with a cross between the antlers, within an inner circle. The surrounding legend reads +IESVS MERCI and this therefore suggests the seal makes reference to the legends of St. Eustace or St. Hubert, both of whom reportedly received a revelation with the appearance of Jesus between a stag's antlers whilst hunting. This seal measures 27.29mm in height, 19.35mm in diameter, and weighs 11.16g.The form of this seal matrix is typical of examples dating to the 14th century AD, with three examples bearing the same legend recorded from London (Harvey and McGuinness, 1996: pp. 88-90, 116, nos. P1033, T895, T896). It dates to the 14th century AD, c.1300-1400 AD.
