Description: | Circumstances of DiscoveryIn October 2006, twenty seven Iron Age coins were discovered. Two early groups of coins (2003T7 and 2005T18) were found at the same spot in 2002 and 2004 respectively, suggesting that the present coins should be considered as addenda to these earlier finds. The CoinsOne of the coins is an uninscribed gold 'stater'; the others are smaller uninscribed gold 'quarter staters'. All were produced towards the end of the first century BC. As none have inscriptions they cannot be directly associated with an historical attested ruler. Their style of these coin types and the distribution of their findspots have led them to be associated with the Cantii, a people thought to have inhabited parts of modern Kent during the late Iron Age.The composition of the present group is remarkably similar to the earlier finds, which also consisted of mainly so-called 'British P' and 'British LZ' types. The coins can be summarised as follows:Type References Quantity1. 'British P' type gold quarter stater VA147variant/BM444 12. 'British LZ1' type gold stater VA144/BM2466 13. 'British LZ2' type gold quarter staters VA151variant/BM2469-70 25ReferencesVA = R Van Arsdell, Celtic Coinage of Britain (London, 1989)BM = R Hobbs, British Iron Age Coins in the British Museum (London, 1996)Date and Metal ContentMetal analysis conducted on other coins of these types suggests that they comprise around 50-60% gold and silver and 40-50% copper. | Publisher: | http://finds.org.uk | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Identifier: | http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/r... | Go to resource |
