Description: | Treasure case 2012 T334Description: Fragment of a Medieval silver annular brooch with inscription. The brooch is D-shaped in section with a flat front and shallowly convex back. The front is decorated with an incised design, the back is plain. On the front is a central ring defined by incised lines within narrow plain inner and outer borders. The central ring contains letters, [...]VS[...],the space between them is filled with cross hatching. There are patinated breaks at either end.Dimensions: It is 10.3mm long by 4.9mm wide and is now 1.1mm thick. It weighs 0.39 grams. It is estimated it was c.35mm in original external diameter.Discussion: This is a small part of a large medieval annular brooch similar to an example illustrated by Egan and Pritchard (1991:254) no.1337 from a later 14th century context. They comment (ibid:255) that IESVS NAZARENVS was a very popular legend on brooches of the period. This brooch from South Petherton may have had a similar legend; the legend was thought to have apotropaic powers. 2008 T595 (LIN-34B1D4) is a fragment of a brooch with a similar legend reported through the Treasure process.Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.Laura Burnett, FLO for Somerset
