Description: | A group of nine lead alloy, globular objects, originally recorded as polyhedral weights, probably of Early Medieval date, but now thought to be Post Medieval buckshot. Each consists of a globule of metal impressed with a number of circular depressions. They range in size from 4.5mm in diameter, weighing 0.43gm, to 5.7mm in diameter, weighing 0.9gm. The others are: 5.49mm, 0.73g; 5.3mm, 0.81g; 5.49mm, 0.72g; and 5.63mm, 0.72g. One further is angular rather than rounded (perhaps squashed) and measures 5.7mm x 4.6mm x 4.3mm and weighs 0.46g. Two additional examples are fused together. They have diameters of 5.33mm and 5.21mm and together weigh 1.64g.These are similar to Treasure Case number 2004 T411, a probable Viking weight also made of lead alloy (and so determined to be Not Treasure), as well as SWYOR-21D072 and SWYOR-E809B3 all from the same area. Though originally recorded as polyhedral weights, the number of similar finds raises the possibility that these are pellets fired from a gun, similar to grape shot but smaller, and of Post Medieval date. Compare examples of buckshot in Harding (2012) "Lead Shot of the English Civil War", for example, Plate 21.
