Description: | Treasure case 2011 T233: Acquired by the Museum of SomersetCircumstances of discovery Addenda to the 2010 find of a hoard of 61 siliqua and 1 half siliqua (2010 T278, SOM-6E89B0) was found on 1st March 2011 whilst metal-detecting on recently cultivated pasture. It was found in the same area as the original case. The coins were dispersed in an area of topsoil about 40 metres square, at the entrance to the field.Description of the find The current find consists of 11 silver siliquae, a number of which were fragmentary. The fragmentary examples have been checked against the fragments in the original group and none are from the same siliqua. As with the previous group there is evidence of recent as well as old damage with some fresh abrasions. The addenda generally follows the pattern of the original group although there are none of the earlier types that were represented in the original group (AD 355 -367). The latest addenda coin, as in the original group, is dated AD 388-395 suggesting an end date before AD 395 is still probable for the hoard. This end date is relatively unusual for British siliqua hoards (Bland, Moorhead and Walton forthcoming, 'Finds of late Roman silver coins from Britain: the contribution of the Portable Antiquities Scheme). Again, as with the original group, only one of the siliqua is clipped and one possible clipped supporting an early date. Trier is the main mint represented (10 out of 11 coins) and six out of the coins are of Gratian. The findspot and types of the coins suggest these finds are part of the same hoard as 2010 T278. In terms of age, association as a group and as the coins contains a minimum of 10% precious metal they qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.A full catalogue is available on request.
