Description: | Medieval cast copper alloy pedestal type seal matrix. The matrix has a central design of a squirrel standing right (left on the seal) within a line border encircles by the legend *PRIVE SV (I am private). The legend starts with a star and ends with a branch as a space filler. The matrix has an oval face and the slightly off centre pedestal type handle rises from the face in six facets, narrowing as it rises to a waist from which it expands out slightly before ending in a flat, transverse, oval loop at the top. The pedestal is slightly scratched and battered, obscuring any marks to indicate the orientation. It is 17.2mm by 16.3mm and 21.1mm tall; it weighs 6.38 grams. This type of seal was popular in the 14th century and both this legend and the design of the squirrel were widely used (Harvey and MacGuiness 1996:88-9).
