Description: | Treasure case 2012 T732: Acquired by the Museum of Somerset1 AR miliarensis, 60 AR siliquae to AD395, BM ref.: 2012 T732Description of the find:The current find consists of 1 fragment of a miliarensis, 39 complete or near complete silver siliquae (two broken into three fragments each), 20 incomplete silver siliquae (one made of two fragments), and one fragment, probably of a silver coin included with the siliquae. The fragmentary examples have been checked against the fragments in the original group and those in the addenda. Two fitted: coin 21d in this addenda with coin 26b in the original group and coin 33c with 49 in the original group. Therefore this new group represents 58 previously unrecorded siliquae bringing the total known to 130 siliquae, 1 miliarensis and 1 half-siliqua. As with the previous group there is evidence of recent as well as old damage with some fresh breaks. The addenda generally follow the pattern of the original group. The latest addenda coin, as in the original group, is dated AD 388-395 suggesting an end date before AD 395 is still probable for the hoard. This end date is relatively unusual for British siliqua hoards , which more commonly end with the period 395-402. Again, as with the original group, the lack of clipping also supports an early date. Trier is the main mint represented (39 out of 61 coins), 15 of the coins are of Magnus Maximus and 12 are of Gratian. The findspot and types of the coins suggest these finds are part of the same hoard as 2010 T278 and 2011 T233. In terms of age, association as a group and as the coins contains a minimum of 10% precious metal they qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.Laura BurnettSomerset FLO
