Description: | Cast copper alloy skirted terret of probable early Roman date43- 200 AD. The terret is incomplete being broken across the cast loop / reign guide. It is irregular in plan and cross section; it comprises of several different elements - several of which are broken. The loop / hoop is incomplete and the broken edges are abraded. There is no evidence of projections or cast decoration on the loop, although the lower internal edge seems to have some faceting; in section the hoop is diamond shaped (faceted oval) and the thickness tapers / varies around the hoop - it is thinnest at the top. The hoop has an external diameter of 24.4mm and an internal diameter of 13.7mm. The base of the hoop joins a flared shaped skirt. At the junction is a relatively thin circumferential band / collar which is decorated with relatively regular vertical recesses creating a rope like pattern. The skirt is an offset sub-rectangular (diamond shaped) in plan with the corners being positioned in line with the hoop. In section the skirt is C shaped - with the edges on all sides descending over a staple shaped attachment loop - now lost. The skirt is 4.5mm thick. The external surface of the skirt is decorated with evenly spaced incised grooves that give a petal shaped pattern. A large depression is present on the underside of the skirt - the attachment fittings are lost - all that remains are two slight projections - possibly rectangular in section but heavily corroded. The terret is a mid green colour with an abraded polished patina on several surfaces. The corrosion and abrasion is most distinctive on one face of the terret and on the underside / beneath the skirt. A good published parallel for this type of skirted terret can be seen in Spratling's Iron Age Corpus from Melandra Castle, Derbyshire. This example was excavated from a Roman fort - the deposit in which it was found was dated to the late Trajanic / early Hadrianic phase - with a deposition date in the late first or early second century AD (Spratling Vol II p420 Catalogue No: 98 / Vol III Fig No 36). Another published example from the Roman fort of South Shields also has a similar' skirt' and is dated to the mid first century AD (Miket and Allason-Jones 1984, 115, 126 fig 73, no 101). A number of similar skirted terrets have been recorded on the PAS database - the closest parallels can be seen in examples :LVPL-DC2465 from Delemare, Cheshire http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/451573WAW-B02F41 from Leominster, Herefordshire http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/415044SF-A449D4 from Aldeborough, Suffolk http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/59791SF-2405A2 from Freckenham, Suffolk http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/250403The terret measures: 32.6mm high, 30.8mm length across the skirt, 30.6mm width across the skirt, and it weighs 19.66 grams.
