Description: | Description: All 17 coins reported belong to the Primary Phase of early medieval silver sceattas. Details are as follows (coin numbers relate to those shown on the images below): catalogue no. type weight (g) diameter (mm) die axis (xo) original coin no. 1 Series BIa (27b) 1.15 11 45 12 2 Series D (type 2c) 1.10 12 90 7 3 Series D (type 2c) 1.13 12 90 4 4 Series D (type 2c) 1.13 11 0 6 5 Series D (type 2c) 1.18 11 270 8 6 Series D (type 2c) 1.17 12 180 9 7 Series D (type 2c) 1.13 11 180 10 8 Series D (type 2c) 1.13 11 0 15 9 Series D (type 2c) 1.02 11 90 16 10 Series D (type 2c) 1.05 11 180 17 11 Series D (type 2c) 0.99 9 0 14 12 Series D (type 2c) 1.15 12 90 11 13 Series D (type 2c) 1.07 11 180 3 14 Series D (type 2c) 1.12 11 0 13 15 Series D (type 8Z) 1.10 10 n/a 1 16 Series E (variety G, probably G3) 1.18 11 0 2 17 Series E (variety J) 1.18 11 0 5 Coins 3-10 are all dies duplicates of both obverse and reverse.Date of deposition: Given the lack of Secondary Phase sceatta types, deposition is most likely to have occurred during the latter years of the Primary Phase (c.680-710/5) given the presence of the coin 2 (Series E, variety G3 datable c.705-10) and the condition of coin 12 (series BIa). The die-linked coins (3-10) and coin 14 all appear to belong to Op den Velde and Metcalf sub-variety 4 (Op den Velde and Metcalf 2003, 40), belonging to the latter stages of Series D. The likely date of deposition should be considered c.710-5.Conclusion: On the balance of probability the above coins represent a small hoard that has been dispersed over time. Given the age of the coins and their precious metal content, and that two or more have been found in association, the find therefore qualifies as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.Author: Dr John NaylorDate: 15/8/14
