Description: | An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Umbonate type (though now flattened), dating from AD 100 - 250. The brooch is circular in form with four protrusions on the frame at the four cardinal points (two of these being to accommodate the pin lug and catchplate, and two for decoration). It is likely that the face of the brooch was one domed with a concave reverse, but it appears to have been flattened and broken in the process. The face of the brooch has a raised border and is decorated with a raised band of copper alloy encircling a four petalled raised flower with a central circular copper alloy pellet surrounded by a ring cell. The recessed areas around the flower and pellet were probably once filled with enamel (see close parallels NCL-EDED84 and LVPL-A7C3E2 to illustrate this) but this is now missing, as is some of the copper alloy plate upon which the enamel would sit - this gives the initial impression of the brooch being open work, but it is not. No trace of enamel survives so we do not know the colour. On the reverse of the brooch is a complete catchplate. The perforated double lug which would have accommodated the axis bar is broken and distorted, and the axis bar and pin itself are missing. There is a small amount of shiny copper surface on one of the frame projections but the rest of the brooch has a dark green patina.
