Description: | A cast copper alloy knife handle dating to the Post-Medieval period. The top of the object is bifurcated and possibly zoomorphic. The centre of the object is decorated with openwork which is sub-triangular in plan within which is a fleur-de-lis. The object expands towards the base which is sub-rectangular in cross-section. At the base of the object are the remains of iron corrosion from the tang of the knife. The object has a mid-green patina and is in good condition. Related although less elaborate types may be found in Read (2001), p88 and are dated to the 16th century. A similar example which can be found on the database is Chester-Kadwell, M (2012) NMS-56B110 A POST MEDIEVAL KNIFE Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/499598.
