Description: | A Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy leg from a cooking vessel. In plan the leg is an elongated trapezoid with the mot narrow edge being the lower edge of the foot. The leg is semi-circular in section with the convex face forming the reverse of the leg. The outer face is decorated with a central vertical ridge. The lower edge of the leg is rounded and worn. The upper edge is obliquely angled and forms the interior of the vessel, therefore it expands beyond the leg forming the vessel wall. All the edges of the vessel wall are broken, but not recently. The interior of the vessel has a smooth mid green/grey patina. The outer face surface is rougher and has a dark grey/green patina with traces of a carbon build up. The leg measures 96.98mm tall, 71.47mm wide and 27.49mm thick. It weighs ....g.It is uncertain what type of vessel this leg comes from, but Egan (Egan G. 1998 The Medieval Household Daily Living c. 1150-c.1450 Museum of London, London, The Stationary Office) comments that commonly used cooking vessels in the Medieval period include skillets, ewers, and cauldrons. Geake (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording Guide Unpublished) suggests such vessels were used from the mid 13th to 16th centuries. Butler and Green (2003 English Bronze Cooking Vessels and Their Founders 1350-1830 Acanthus Press) comment cooking vessels can date up to the mid 18th century.
