Description: | A medieval cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant containing a lively depiction of a butterfly in red (or possibly brown) and white enamel. The suspension loop is intact. The device is linked with the Audley family who used the device as a familiar badge. The butterfly depicted here is similar to that on HESH-C85A60. Other harness pendants have been recorded with moths or butterflies similar to this - interestingly this holds a distribution associated with the landholdings of the Audley family - with a small concentration in Cheshire / North Shropshire.Hale, Cheshire: LVPL1880 http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/6439Churchton -by-Aldford, Cheshire: LVPL-375DD7 http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/176621Long Melford, Suffolk: SF-8BC685 http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/535343Osgodby, Lincolnshire : NLM-505AE6 http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/50435Maltby, South Yorkshire: NLM4677 http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/12139Similar devices can also be seen hereGooderstone, Norfolk: SF8239 http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/34240Crondall, Hampshire: SUR-F76721 http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/156922An example has also been discovered at the excavations of a monastic site at Poulton, Cheshire.
