Description: | A copper-alloy personal seal matrix of Medieval date.The circular printing face bears an engraved 'Agnus dei' image, comprising a lamb standing right (left, when printed), holding a cross and flag. When printed, the legend extends clockwise from 12 o'clock and reads '+ECCE AGNVS DEI' ('Behold the Lamb of God'). The hexagonal-sectioned handle extends vertically upwards from behind the printing face and has lost its upper portion.Diameter: 16.7mm; height: 9.6mm; weight: 5.2g.Impersonal seal matrices of this form, often bearing religious scenes and phrases, are a feature of the 14th century. Several parallels for this piece are recorded on the PAS database, including IHS-FC7526, which provides a useful discussion of the meaning and significance of the Agnus Dei.
