Description: | A leg from a Medieval or early Post-Medieval cooking vessel. It is sub-rectangular in section with a central raised rib running the length of the outer face. There is a break at one end where is would have attached to the vessel and possibly at the other end making it difficult to determine the shape of the foot (although this may simply be worn through use). With regards to a much larger, but also very simple vessel leg from Somerset also recorded on the PAS database (SOM-184273), expert in copper alloy cooking vessels Roderick Butler (pers. comm.) has commented that at present we can only date fragments of cauldrons broadly, as largely the same design was in use from the 12th to the 18th century. However, by the 17th century feet tend to be of the later collared type, suggesting a Medieval or early Post-Medieval date at the latest for this vessel.Length: 34.0mm, width: 31.0mm, thickness: 7.3mm, weight: 32.32g
