Description: | Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, hexagonally faceted handle with collar pierced terminal. A fragment of an iron chain link or suspension loop occupies the hole. Circular, diameter 18.5mm. Length / height 26mm. A cockerel walking left. * CROV ME DAI followed by a filler (Crow my day). This same legend has been recorded on matrices from Suffolk and Warwickshire (SF-6FB704 and WAW-A7F923), and on another from Merton, Norfolk (Rogerson and Ashley 2005, 735, no. 32). Its true meaning is uncertain. 14th century.
