Description: | A cast copper alloy seal matrix dating to the Medieval period. The object is hexagonal in plan with a faceted handle. The handle tapers towards a collar below the suspension loop. The suspension loop has a circular perforation with an internal diameter of 3mm. The object depicts a squirrel facing right (left in the impression), seated on its haunches, its tail curled along its back, front paws raised and pointed ears back. Surrounding this reads the legend JE SV SEL NV - I am like no-one?Wildlife, particularly squirrels, hares and rabbits appear frequently on matrices of this type. Seal matrices of this type bearing imaginative legends in French or English and with decorative rather than heraldic central elements are typical of the 14th century AD. Harvey and McGuinness, (1996: pp. 88-89, 116).
