Description: | A cast copper-alloy seal matrix of Medieval date. It is circular in form with a hexagonally faceted conical terminal that tapers towards the integral suspension loop. The suspension loop is trefoil in form with quatrefoil aperture and prominent moulded collar formed from a transverse ridge flanked by grooves. The die has a central motif depicting an uncertain motif, possibly a vessel or crib/manger(?), all within an inner circle. This is surrounded by a legend that appears to read V[V?]ES[L?]VA that was possibly never intelligible and may simply be a collection of random letters. The seal matrix measures 19.14mm in diameter, 23.91mm in height, and 8.61g in weight. This is a seal matrix of Medieval date. No close parallel for the central motif or legend has been identified, and it is uncertain as to whether the legend is truly intelligible or not. Seal matrices of this type post-date c.1300 AD and suggest a 14th century date for the current example (Harvey and McGuinness, 1996: 88-89).
