Description: | A copper-alloy Medieval (AD 1300-1400) seal matrix with a circular die and a hexagonally faceted handle, terminating in a pierced lozenge above a double-ridged moulded collar. The object stands 20.97mm in height and weighs 6.51g. The die measures 17.84mm in diameter. The die bears the image of a cockerel facing right, which faces left as an impression. The legend reads 'CROV ME DAI[Y?]' which is probably translated as 'Crow me day', possibly a Medieval joke. This same legend has been recorded on matrices from Suffolk and Warwickshire (SF-6FB704 and WAW-A7F923), and on another from Merton, Norfolk (Rogerson and Ashley 2005, 735, no. 32).
