Description: | A cast copper alloy object of uncertain function and date. The object consists of a circular sectioned arm which tapers towards one end terminating with a pointed hook. The hook measures 0.5mm in diameter where it terminates. The arm is 6.5mm in diameter at its widest point. The opposite end of the object terminates with a pointed triangular 'arrow-head'. The base of the terminal 'arrow-head' measures 5mm in width and 3.5mm in thickness. The terminal measures 6mm in length. Below the base of the arrow is a circular sectioned shaft, measuring 4mm in diameter which widens with a step where it joins the main body/arm of the object. The function of the object is unknown however it possibly functioned as a marlinspike (marling spike/marlin spike/marline spike) or a fid, both of which are tools used in marlispike seamanship (ropemaking, net-making and for tying and untying knots). The point would be used to pry open knots, in the process of splicing ropes together, for separating twines or as a makeshift handle, such as Burrill, C (2010) DENO-78EBC2 A POST MEDIEVAL MARLIN SPIKE Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/405814. It may alternatively be a punch for applying decoration or a tool such as an awl. A similar tool which can be found on the database is ANDREWS, D (2004) SUSS-F60648 A IRON AGE UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/79980.The object has patches of mid-green patina remaining and is corroded.
