Description: | A cast copper alloy figurine of probable Romano-British or possibly later Iron Age date. The figurine is in the form of a bull and appears to have originally formed one component of a larger artefact, possibly as a decorative mount for a vessel or similar object. The animal is in a recumbent position, with its head slightly turned to one side. The head is angular and has ears that project sideways and horns curving upwards which are incomplete. The eyes are incised and lentoid in shape. Small depressions indicate nostrils and the animal has a horizontal groove forming the mouth. The legs of the bull are tucked under the body and the tail curls around the rear and up onto its back. Seven incised lines on one side of the object represent the animal's ribs. Incised lines running down the nape of the neck indicate hair. The lower surface is flat around its perimeter with a hollowed out section in the middle to allow the figurine to sit on a surface. The same treatment can be seen on a reindeer figurine from Milber Down, Devon (Jope 2000, 270; pl. 181). It can be also seen on the following two figurines which have been recorded on the database, http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/433132 and http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/269403. File marks are visible on the edges of the base and towards the rear of the animal at projecting from the base is a spike/lug.A similar example of a bull with a hollowed out base recorded on the database is Basford, F (2010) IOW-2CA926 A ROMAN VESSEL Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/289251.
