Description: | A cast copper alloy strap fitting or slide of late Iron Age to early Roman date. The mount is sub-oval (egg or eye shaped) in plan and D shaped in cross section. The centre of the object is decorated with a raised solid circular boss surrounded by a cast circular groove. The overall pattern is similar to that of an eye. The reverse of the mount is flat with an incomplete oval sectioned integral lug at either end. Each lug has broken during antiquity. A ridge, possibly resulting from casting, runs between each lug at the back of the object. The object has a mid-green patina and is chipped due to both ancient and recent damage.A similar example which has been recorded on the database is Griffiths, R (2009) YORYM-B3DD45 A IRON AGE STRAP FITTING Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/270786. This form of decoration also occurs on button and loop fasteners which have been dated from the late Iron Age to the early Roman period. For a complete example see Oakden, V (2010) LVPL-B1B793 A IRON AGE BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/384022. A similar example can be found in Murawski, (2000), p35.
