Description: | A copper alloy Roman trumpet headed brooch dating to AD 75-175. The trumpet shaped head is incomplete with recent damage at the top where the headloop would have attached. Below the head the object narrows to form a neck before joining on to a circular disc. The lower edges of the disc are incomplete and it may have had decorative lugs. The disc is decorated with a circular band of blue enamel. In the centre of the enamelled band is a depression measuring 1.40mm deep. This would also have been in-filled with enamel and traces of red are visible on the inside edges. In the centre of the depression is a raised pellet. The lower bow and foot of the brooch are missing due to ancient breaks. At the rear of the brooch the spring is visible within the trumpet head and is formed with six coils of the spring. Iron corrosion surrounds the pin which is not magnetic. The pin is missing as is the catchplate. The back of the disc is flat and smooth. The object has a dark brown patina and is in good condition.Similar more complete example which can be found on the database is Tanner, A (2014) WILT-1504B2 A ROMAN BROOCH Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/625076 and Oakden, V (2014) LVPL-7A5F83 A ROMAN BROOCH Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/597918.
