Description: | A fragment of a cast copper alloy zoomorphic buckle of Early Medieval date. The fragment is C-shaped in plan and features a zoomorphic terminal possibly of a serpent head which terminates in an old break. The head is sub-triangular in shape and is decorated by two curved grooves which depict the eye. A third groove depicts the line of the mouth which is partly open, the head terminating in an upper and lower jaw. At the top of the animal's head is a rounded knop which on one side is decorated with a moulded curl. The opposite end of the object terminates with an ancient break. It has a mid-green patina. It is likely that the strap bar would have projected out of the open jaws of the animal.A similar example which can be found on the database is Shoemark, J (2014) WILT-6B3438 A EARLY MEDIEVAL BUCKLE Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/595400 and a complete example is ANDREWS, D (2009) YORYM-FBF378 A EARLY MEDIEVAL BUCKLE Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/252478.
